Attendance Matters!
Grand County School District is focused on improving attendance!
Our school district is working on bringing attendance rates up across the district. To do so, we are partnering with parents, businesses, and community partners to ensure that students in our community are in school, on time and ready to learn.
Its commonly known that 80% of success is showing up, but after huge drops in attendance nationally during the pandemic, attendance rates in Moab still haven't rebounded - So we're asking our community to spread the word and help to improve our attendance numbers together!
Why is Attendance So Important?
It might seem obvious that attendance is important, but many people don't know the consequences of missing time. Whether you have a kindergartener who is just getting used to school and is homesick for their parent, or whether you have a high schooler who is struggling with mental health and you want to give them an extra day, those absences can add up quickly... here are some articles from the experts about what excused, unexcused and over time - chronic absences, can do to a students success...
- Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence! Read more...
- Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back. Read more...
- By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school. Read more...
- Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent. Read more...
- Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. Read more...
What Does The Problem Look Like?
Over 8 million U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year ( Read more here) and in Moab our attendance rates are in the mid to high 80's. That means more than 150 students are missing school every day! Beyond it being such a high number of students, for many of these 150 the frequency that they miss is also concerning - these absent students aren't just missing a day or two, but many are missing dozens of days and it becomes very hard to catch up!
To change the game, Grand County School District is challenging our schools to increase their attendance to over 92% by the end of the year. We are doing so by spreading the word, through special recognition, positive phone calls, by shoutouts on announcements on social media and in hallways, and with whole class and individual prizes! We are hoping to not only move the needle this year, but begin to change the culture for years to come.
We know that when students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating(Read more here). We are working with businesses to spread the importance of attendance by sharing our Attendance Matters materials in their lobby's and on restaurant tables. Many businesses are also helping by providing prizes to classes each week who match or rise above the 92% attendance rate.
Good attendance is good prevention - by being in school children have more chances of developing social skills and confidence that will serve them throughout their life, building friendships, building self esteem, identifying positively as learners and students, and by building relationships with adult mentors who will help them as they go through school. Our prevention partners at Seekhaven, Four Corners Behavioral Health, Moab Regional Hospital, Southeastern Utah Health Department and many others are working to help us make phone calls home, spread word to the community, are providing prizes and using their connections to support our work.
How can you help?
As we spread this campaign we know that our community is a great ally. Please consider taking some of the following actions to ensure our campaign is a success:
1. Repost and share stories about our efforts and about classes who have success. Good news is powerful and we want to start trends and make showing up exciting and worth while!
2. Talk to your kids about the importance of attendance and challenge them to encourage their friends to show up and make the 92% goal and get rewarded!
3. Don't take excusing absences lightly. Ensure your students aren't missing days.
4. If you are a business owner or non-profit or if you know one that would like to contribute, we are in search of 120 small and fun items for kids (enough for one class), or donated funds to buy prizes. We are also in search of restaurants or organizations who would be interested in donating exciting food treats - cakes, popsicles, pizza parties etc. to inspire classes to rise up over 92%!
