School Rules
The Grand County Board of Education has established the Grand County Discipline Guide to govern all schools. This policy is available upon request from the District Office or the HMK Office. The District Discipline Guide governs Academic Honesty, Dress Code, Attendance and Safe Schools Violations. In addition, each district school establishes its own rules and procedures. Following are HMK's School Rules:
- Follow directions.
- Interact respectfully.
- Keep hands and feet to self.
- Walk while in buildings or on walkways.
- Throw no objects (snowballs, rocks, pencils, erasers, etc.)
- Gum and candy are prohibited at school and at school-related activites.*
- Remove hats upon entering any building.
Note:
- *Gum and candy may be used occasionally in activities planned by staff and-or parents.
- K-8 schools support natural hair colors only.
T.A.Gs
“Non-severe” Misbehavior (Verbal Reminders, T.A.G.S)
Misbehavior that is neither dangerous nor highly disruptive is termed “non-severe.” The HMK staff will actively teach students School and District Rules at the beginning of the school yiar. Rules will be continually reinforced. Should you student need assistance in remembering school rules, verbal reminders will be given whenever possible. Should you student consistently disregard verbal requests, he or she will receive a written warning. When you student talks about “Tags,” he or she is referring to this type of a warning. “Tag” stands for “Teacher Assistance Given.” Parents will be notified by phone if their student disregards both verbal and written requests to improve behavior. If a student persists in disregarding “T.A.Gs” after parents have been notified, the student will receive an office referral for refusing to follow directions.
Office Referral
Fortunately, most students work hard at school and strive to improve. At HMK, students are not allowed to disrupt the learning environment. When a student severely or continually disrupts the learning environment, threatens or harms others, or violates District Policy he/she will receive an Office Referral. The Office Referral Process is as follows.
1st referral: Office notifies parent; student is assigned limited In-School Suspension time.
2nd referral: Parent and student are scheduled to meet with the principal; student is again assigned limited In-School Suspension.
3rd referral: Office notifies parent; student receives lengthier In-School Suspension and must stay after school 30 minutes.
4th referral Office notifies parent; student receives lengthier In-School Suspension and must stay after school 1 hour.
5th referral Student is suspended until the Student Assistant Team can meet with the parent and student; student is placed on a Behavior Plan. Each subsequent Office Referral will result in a suspension until the Student Assistant Team, student and parent can meet to revise the Student’s Behavior Plan.
Severe Misbehavior: Suspension
Severe behaviors resulting in suspension are as follows:
Ø Safe Schools Violations – threats or actions infringing on the safety of others.
Ø Possession of Illegal Substances
Ø Upbraiding (degrading school staff)
Ø Fighting/Hitting
Ø Slapping/Kicking/Pushing/Tripping
Ø Recklessness resulting in injury of another
Ø Possession of lighter, matches or pocketknife
Ø ‘Non-severe’ behavior that is escalated such as bullying, intimidating, provoking a fight, gang behavior, theft, vandalism, obscene acts/gestures, willful disobedience.
Bullying: Zero Tolerance
At Helen M. Knight Intermediate School, each student has a right to feel safe and to be educated in a productive learning environment. Related to each student’s feeling of safety, HMK supports zero tolerance for bullying. Parents play a critical role in assisting the school in maintaining a bully-free environment. If you student is being bullied at school, we ask you to contact Principal Margaret Hopkin (259-7350

A shirt or dress with a deep-scooped front, shoulder straps less than one inch wide, a deep-cut back, and/or deep cut armholes is inappropriate.
