Meet the New Superintendant



Information Regarding the Approved Hiring of Dr. Scott L. Crane
for the Position of Superintendent Grand County School District

Tuesday in a special public session the Grand County Board of Education approved the hiring of Dr. Scott
L. Crane for the position of Superintendent of Grand County School District. Dr. Crane has served in
administrative positions the Blackfoot School District, Blackfoot, Idaho, for the past twenty-six years. He
comes to Grand County with experience as Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Secondary
Education, Director of District Finance, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. He brings sixteen
years of experience as Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. Dr. Crane's strengths include his
leadership and teambuilding abilities, his strong communication skills, his focus on accountability and
student achievement, his ability to make difficult decisions as needed and his penchant for creative
problem solving.

Grand's Superintendent search has been exhaustive. 8eginningln January 2012, the Board of Education
conducted a public input process to determine the desired qualifications of Grand School District's next
superintendent. This process involved an open forum, community and staff surveys, as well as several
meetings of community and staff subcommittees. The major qualifications or attributes that came out of
the process were strong leadership and communication skills, financial management experience,
commitment to student achievement; and the ability to bring together diverse perspectives to make
tough, controversial decisions. The twenty-five subcommittee members comprised of community
members, parents and staff also met several times in April to assist the local school board in developing
the job announcement, recruiting applicants; reviewing applications and, finally, recommending
applicants to be interviewed.

Dr. Crane not only brings a broad background of educational experience to Grand County, but an
impressive array of personal interests. These interests include spending time with his family, travel,
reading, riding motorcycles for pleasure, playing guitar, rock and roll, woodworking and movies. He
enjoys sports as evidenced in his past position as high school head track coach. He speaks Spanish
fluently. Kathy, his wife of 34 years, will accompany him to Moab. They have two grown children,
Lyndsey and Shawn, and two grandchildren, Titus and Eldon. Kathy is an educator and author. She is
founder of an online business, Kindergarten Kiosk.

Although Dr. Crane will visit Grand County and train with retiring superintendent Margaret Hopkin
during May and June he will formally begin his work as Superintendent of Grand County School District
on July 1, 2012, marking the new fiscal year.
