JOB DESCRIPTION: Assistant Principal
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the building principal works to relieve the principal and is responsible for the following: maintains discipline within the building; communicates with the faculty on discipline concerns; contacts parents regarding discipline enforcement; monitors attendance; initiates and oversees registration; develops the master schedule; provides overall leadership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*
1. Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school.
2. Serves as principal in the absence of the regular principal.
3. Proposes schedules of classes and extracurricular activities.
4. Supervises the preparation of student schedules.
5. Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance, and does investigative follow-up actions.
6. Coordinates grade reports for state computer and enters all corrected grades.
7. Cooperates in the conducting of safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
8. Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body, and deals with special cases as necessary.
9. Supervises extra-curricular activities as assigned.
10. Serves with parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
11. Attends staffing for special education as assigned.
12. Performs such record-keeping functions as the principal may direct.
13. Coordinates S.A.T/A.C.T. Testing.
14. Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as the principal may assign.
DETAILED FUNCTIONS*
Discipline
1. Monitors the halls and outside building areas; checks that students have passes. If they do not have a pass, walks them to class or has them return to class. Crucial times to be in the hallways are five minutes prior to first bell in the morning for twenty minutes; during all passing bells; and for fifteen minutes after last bell of the day.
2. During lunch, monitors the hallways and grounds. Keeps students out of the gym. Is in the halls when the first lunch bell rings ending lunch.
3. Handles discipline notices in a prompt and timely manner.
4. Calls parent/guardian to inform them of disciplinary actions.
5. If unable to reach parent/guardian by phone to notify of a suspension, sends a suspension letter.
6. Prior to student returning from suspension, calls parent/guardian to set up appointment.
7. Keeps the principal informed of any unusual or difficult discipline situations; informs the principal if a follow-up call by him/her is necessary.
8. Supervises the in-school suspension aide by checking on a regular basis that ISS rules are enforced.
9. Keeps in daily contact with the truant officer.
10. Checks daily that the attendance secretary is calling home on absences. Assists whenever necessary.
Registration
1. Initiates pre-registration process with guidance in late January or early February.
2. Collects all pre-registration forms and proceeds with registration process.
3. Using information from completed bubble sheets as to numbers, works with the principal in determining the classes to be offered.
4. Proceeds with the development of the master schedule.
5. Completes Student Information System (SIS) input.
6. Reports any scheduling problems to the principal. All students will have a complete schedule.
7. The Master Schedule will be completed by the end of the school year, and class cards will be ready for distribution to students.
8. Assists with registration, including class changes, etc., in August.
Additional Duties:
1. Whenever substitute teachers are in the building, checks on them throughout the day. Provides assistance when necessary and informs the principal of any problems with substitutes.

Required Education and Training for Essential Functions:
1. Must hold, qualify or be working towards valid Utah Administrative License.
