JOB DESCRIPTION: ALS Teacher
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the School Principal, the ALS Teacher is responsible for the education of assigned students identified as LEP and will create a flexible environment favorable for learning and personal growth. The teacher will establish effective rapport with student; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education, and do so in accordance with each student's ability. Professional relations will be developed and maintained with other staff and parents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*
1. Assist content area teachers in integrating reading and writing strategies for English Language Learners in their classrooms. improvement.
2. Provide ongoing collaboration and consultation services to staff members regarding progress and instructional needs of ELLs in their classrooms.
3. Assist in the identification and programming for ELLs.
4. Plan instruction based on formal and informal assessment of ELL abilities and needs.
5. Implement instructional design appropriate for the assessed needs of ELLs.
6. Provide for and maintain student involvement during instruction.
7. Use assessment of student outcomes to monitor the effectiveness of instruction provided through the ALS program.
8. Demonstrate competency in administration and interpretation of formal and informal assessments appropriate for ELLs.
9. Communicate student progress effectively to student, parent/guardian, and staff.
10. Coordinate end-of-year assessment of ELL students using the IPT. Compile and report test results to ALS Director and building principal.
11. Assist in providing communication and support to parents regarding literacy issues for ELLs.
12. Maintain required and necessary student records in an accurate and thorough manner.
13. Accept and fulfill assigned responsibilities and duties in a prompt and efficient manner.
14. Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment an supplies.
15. Follow Board of Education policies, building procedures, and any other rules, regulations, or procedures that may be established by the central or building administration.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary to Performance of Essential Functions:
1. Demonstrates in-depth skill and knowledge of reading and writing processes and instructional strategies for English Language Learners.
2. Demonstrates knowledge of language development needs of ELLs.
3. Demonstrates knowledge of the most current research and practice regarding reading and writing for ELLs.
4. Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills.
5. Evidence of ability to establish and maintain supportive, cooperative relationships with school personnel, students, and parents.
Required Education and Training for Essential Functions:
1. Valid Utah teaching license and subject specific endorsement, or alternative program leading to license.
