Schools >> Grand County Middle School

Space

The state mandates that the middle school include a family and consumer science curriculum. This space is now unavailable. There are also no consultation spaces or testing & evaluation areas. Like the other schools in the district, there is a need for additional classroom and storage space.

No Space

Facilities deficiencies:

The Middle School needs an upgrade to the cooling/heating system; there are currently inadequate temperature control in areas with no thermostat. Further, cooling/heating units are noisy and disrupt the classrooms. Additional cooling is needed in the cafeteria as the evaporative cooler is not adequate

The entire building needs to be rewired to accommodate electrical needs. Electrical wiring overloads, cords on floors, and overuse of extension cords limit educational flexibility and safety.

The present 1962 pumbing and water system must be replaced.

Poor roof drainage requires installation of secondary drain and repair. Walls and ceilings were built with no extra space for electrical or mechanical upgrade.

Water Damage

Leaky Roof

Broken Seals                  Non-ADA Bathrooms      Roof Needs Replacement

Compliance/Safety

The building is prone to seismic vulnerability and rates poor in the seismic evaluation. Bathrooms need to be ADA accessible; sinks and hardware are non-compliant. Drinking fountains need to be away from electrical panels.

Wire glass needs to be removed.

A fire sprinkling system is needed in the cafeteria and Middle School.

Inadequate ventilation in the locker rooms

A schoolwide upgrade of communication system and alarms (and cameras) is needed. The cafeteria lacks a public announcement (PA) system; PA system coverage is inadequate. Fire Alarm system coverage is inadequate; fire alarm pull stations are too high for ADA standards; there are too few or no horns and strobes in the hallways and classrooms.

Water too close to electrical

Poor Wheelchair Access            No Railings or Ramp                     Wireglass

Technology needs:

As with most schools throughout the district, classrooms need to be updated with the latest educational technology, including a computer network wiring update and electrical wiring update.

Other:

The library needs new furniture—tables, shelves, circulation desk.  The current library tables and chairs are from the old Middle School (New City Hall Building) remodel (mid-1970’s) or before.  The circulation desk is well-worn and in need of at least a new Formica top.  The shelves are old and the trim is damaged or gone on many sections.
