RED ROCK
Space
Red Rock Elementary is operating at full capacity. As Red Rock expands its
programs into full day kinder-garten, space becomes even tighter. Currently,
the need for extra grade level classrooms is leaving little or no space for
federal programs such as Special Education, Title One (Reading Assistance)
and English Language Learner programs. These program instructors often meet
with students in ‘make-shift’ instructional spaces.
In addition to cramped program areas, teacher workroom space for
instructional preparation is limited and conference room space for meeting
with parents is lacking. As with all District facilities, there is little or
no storage space.
Facility Deficiencies
The kitchen needs major remodeling of its floors, walls, counters and
equipment. The entire facility needs to be rewired for greater electrical
loads and re-plumbed to address the orange ‘iron’ water that comes from the
old pipes.
A major focus is required in redesigning the pick up & drop off zones.
The original design is outdated for today’s travel standards – many more
parents are driving students to and from school and this creates
considerable traffic congestion.
Compliance and SafetyRed Rock was built under 1950’s compliance codes. Red Rock’s walls are of unreinforced masonry. This means the walls are not built to withstand forces of severe wind or earthquakes. Even without these forces, Red Rock’s walls are crumbling from years of settling. The walls need to be reinforced which is a major construction job. (Basically, the walls need to be taken down to the foundation and rebuilt.) The District works diligently to bring deficiencies up to code based on available revenues. Currently, however, rest rooms and some entryways need remodeling for handicapped accessibility. Some main hallways are narrow with classroom doors opening out into halls and drinking fountains standing out into walking zones. Current codes calls for recessed doors and hall equipment. Work needs to be done to upgrade the fire alarm system, emergency lighting and to install fire sprinkers in rooms and hallways building wide.

HELEN M KNIGHT
SpaceCurrently there is a need for at least one more classroom. The office is crowded when several people enter at the same time. The teacher workroom and lounge are not adequate in size. The current conference room is crowed when 5 people enter. Public restrooms in the main building are too small.
Facility DeficienciesThe bathrooms are not fully accessible per ADA requirements. The chimney needs to be removed to prevent collapse. Bad and cold weather creates discomfort to students who have to leave the room to use the restrooms and to rotate classes. The kitchen is not designed to current sanitary and health codes.
Compliance /Safety IssuesThe restrooms do not meet ADA Standards. The modular classroom is located too close to main building, which does not meet current building code. The chimney is un-reinforced masonry and may collapse. There is no assessable drop-off zone for students in front of the building. There is no emergency power for exit lights. Because of the open access to the classrooms, it is nearly impossible for a lock-down. There is no fire detection in the classrooms.

VOCATIONAL
SpaceWe do not have any additional space for future increases in our student population or the addition of programs.
Facility Deficiencies
For the future, the focus will be to build a new vocational center adjacent
to the existing main building. The bathrooms at the Vocational Center need
to be upgraded to be ADA compliant.
Compliance/SafetyAn emergency shower needs to be put in place in the Auto Shop as well as the ceiling repaired so the fibers do not fall onto students/staff. The same ceiling repair needs to happen in the wood shop. Bathroom upgrades need to happen as well. Communication between the main building and the Vocational Center needs to be upgraded. Hand rails and guard rails need to be placed on stairwells, etc.
